| OK so recently my MPT has gone done a lot. When I first got my car in March 07 I was getting about 230-250 per tank. I was driving the car almost everyday on both city and highway. Now my car is getting about 170-200 MPT. Anyone know what the problem could be?
Also, how many miles does everyone else get on their GTs or 6ers? _________________ Joe's Garage: 2000 Ford Mustang 3.8 Auto 1995 Jeep Wrangler 2.5 5spd

| Don't forget to reset your gallons used, mpg, and any other gas related parameters. _________________

so funny though she has a book in her glove box where she jots down how much mpg she got everytime _________________ 93 Tunes, C&L CAI, Custom 8.8 Rear with 3.73/TLok, Ford Racing X-Pipe with Dual MRT Aerotubines, Sequential Taillights, Avic-D3... | i just got 180 out of about 3/4 of the tank it was about 16 mi per gallon that was without probably half town half highway.
not sure if 16 mpg is good for a v6 what is everyone else getting, the only mod on mine right now is a dual exhaust |

| i usually get between 250-260 on my 03 GT. When i had my 2001 v6 i would only get about 180-210 miles per tank. however, my v6 was an automatic and my GT is a 5 spd which definitely helps mpg IF you drive it nice.
Before you spend money on a mechanic, try going to a few different gas stations though. Some gas stations mix in like 10-15% ethanol which gets horrible gas mileage in our cars. Weather also plays a factor and the probability that your driving style has changed after you got used to your mustang is very likely. Ex. When i got my 03 last june on the first two fill ups I averaged 21 mpg whereas now I get barely over 18. Same story with my 2001 v6: 19 new, 17 old. Mustangs are built to make you want to go fast and I bet if you pay close attention to yourself while you're driving to see if you accelerate 60-75% from dead stops and leave the RPM's up for the resonance (if its a stick) you'll see why your mpg has gone down. Hard braking and cornering also can drag it down some. Certain mods without a tune can do it too. Are the new wheels you put on (which look great by the way) the same size as the stock rims? You probably know this but if you went with a bigger set that will trick your car's computer without a calibration making it think you drove less than you did.
I would say try a different gas station or two, and drive it like theres an egg under the pedal. If your mpg goes up to what it used to be, then the answer to your problem is that you're being harder on your car than you realized (like me )

| My v6 is an auto. I have done the different gas station deal, but that doesnt work. Yes my driving style has changed, but not drasticaly where I should be getting only 11 MPG. I only accelerate hard when i need to get in front of somebody or get onto a highway or something. The rims are 18s and I had 15s. My auto teacher told me that should not have anything to do with gas mileage. Im bringing into my auto shop tomorrow to hook it up to a scan tool and check the plugs, etc.
Thanks for the reply and the compliment on the wheels! _________________ Joe's Garage: 2000 Ford Mustang 3.8 Auto 1995 Jeep Wrangler 2.5 5spd

| did you just start to have this problem when you put on the new wheels? the gas mileage will not be affected by bigger tires but the computer can be fooled into thinking so. if you change the diameter of the wheels on the car, in this case 3", times every time the tire spins (tens of thousands) it equals a lot and will make your computer think it went less than it really did because it is not accounting for the extra 3". This explains it a little better:
The overall height (diameter) is the what determines the amount of ground covered for each rotation of the tire (circumfrence). If you tire is taller than the circumfrence is longer and therefore you will cover more ground per tire rotation. If you tire is smaller than the circumfrence is shorter and therefore you will cover less ground per tire rotation.
Here's how to deteremine if you need a speedo adjustment. Go to your local freeway or some location where you are able to know the specific distance in miles (or KM). Get up to speed and when you pass the marker for the beginning, look at your odometer. When you pass the second marker, check your odometer again.
I have 3/4 FWD that I put 36" tires on. When I do this test, after going 10 miles, my speedo says only went 8 miles. This means that for every 10 miles I travel, I actually went 12. Thus for each 10mph increment of speed I must add 2 miles. Therefore if the speedo says I am going 60mph, my actual speed is 72. The math is as follows, current speed + (( Current speed / speedo check distance) * difference is speedo during check) or 60 + ((60 / 10) *2). As you can see the best distance to check is 10 miles. This also insures a more accurate reading.
try to figure out how badly your speedo is off and how many miles your computer is actually recording. that should bump up that 11mpg number but I'm sure by how much. keep us posted if you find out the problem. |

| I think a big problem was that my throttle body was filthy. It was filled with some junk and my air filter is a little dirty. Im going to clean my filter tomorrow and fill up my gas tank and I will try that crazy idea you have hockey. I will say this tho, the car runs a lot better with a clean Throttle Body _________________ Joe's Garage: 2000 Ford Mustang 3.8 Auto 1995 Jeep Wrangler 2.5 5spd

| I got 400 the other day... my eyes popped out of my head, and it wasn't a mistake, I went from full to empty (1/2 gallon left at the pump) it was unreal, but probably due to the fact that I didn't let my rpms over 2750 so there was absolutely no hard accelerating and even on the highway I kept it at a respectable 75 and never took it out of 5th gear...
I think the biggest help is just keeping the hard acceleration to a minimum - I got into a race a week or 2 prior to my marathon gas tank - needless to say that race knocked me down to about 260 miles to that 16 gallon tank. _________________ 99 V6 5spd Vert.
