update from tuesday...
well my dad has had a setback from yesterday to today on his own terms. the doctors were letting his sedatives wear off so that he could be more responsive to test him while he is conscious. the first thing he did when he was awake enough was pull out the feeding and breathing tubes saying "i dont need this f*****g thing! i thought the whole point was for me to breathe and not some a$$hole machine?!" in the process of all this, he has caused some internal bleeding which the doctors are 99% sure is in his throat area rather than in his lungs (and if they arent right ill string them up and ______________. you can fill in the blank). so today they are going to perform a tracheometry and put the breathing and feeding tubes through there rather than in his mouth and down. at this point the doctors now believe he will be on the ventilator for at least another week because of the collapsed lung, the leak, and now the bleeding. also because of this whole ordeal, they had to do another brochioscope which revealed the bleeding. the reason they dont believe he is bleeding in his lungs is because there was only blood on the outside of the tool they used rather than what it drained out. my mom is going in around 11 (the earliest she can see my dad or the doctors is noon) and she will give me all the updates from this morning until then. funny thing is my grandfather did the same exact thing (pulling out the ventilator and feeding tube) because he wanted to do everything on his own. other than this self-inflicted setback, my dad is still doing well by the numbers.

definitely gotta keep the prayers coming now. thanks to everyone as this is a very hard time for my family.

update from earlier...
my mom just called me with this info: they will not be performing the tracheometry today. my dads surgeon wants one of his doctors to perform another brochioscope today to further examine where the bleeding is coming from. they still believe that it is from him yanking out the tubes and that he did some damage in his throat rather than his lung/s. if they perform the trache they will do it in a day or 2. the doctors are also going to put my dad on more sedatives to keep him from doing anything else to himself. my mom is still going in (she is on her way now) and will keep me updated

Well, my father passed away in May of 2005 from a cardiac arrest due to an insane amount of complications... Long story short...he had very bad diabetes, had a quadruple bypass at the age of 46 with a blood sugar level of 1000 (500 usually will put you in a coma or worse). The diabetes and open wounds that wouldn't heal led to gangrine (?sp) and an amputated finger and half a leg. He went to dialysis treatments 15 hours a week, 3 months of rehab to learn how to walk on his new leg, etc. He was so frustrated with everything, he decided to stop taking his insulin.

It sux that we didn't have the greatest relationship towards the end of his life... Sad

At least you and your father have that. Hold that dear to your heart sweetie. I'm sure it will keep him holding on and strong throughout this ordeal.

I will keep praying, of course dear.

update from yesterday...
theres good news and bad news (but not too bad). the good news is the doctors turned off his ventilator yesterday and he was breathing completely and 100% on his own for 6 hours straight. the bad news is they need to keep the breathing tube in him to help him relax and build his energy up to strengthen his entire body. because they are keeping the tubes in they need to keep y dad sedated so he doesnt keep pulling them out. when he is sedated, he doesnt build his energy since he is in such a state of unconsciousness. the doctors still want to trache him because they feel it will do best with the breathing tube to keep him pulling at it all the time. the doctors and my mom also believe my dad is developing a case of "hospital psychosis". it sounds worse than what it really is (because i thought he was going crazy when my mom told me). it basically means he is surrounded by the constant hustle and bustle of a hospital and all the alarms and beeping from other patients where it kinda drives him crazy because it makes it hard to sleep with all the activity. when he gets home (whenever that will be) he will sleep like a baby and be very relaxed. thats all for right now.

i saw my dad yesterday for the first time since his surgery date. they trached him on friday and now have him on and off the ventilator. they are exercising his lungs by having him breathe on his own for about 4 hours and then resting him for another 6-8 hours each day. they are keeping him somewhat sedated during the day so he can communicate with the doctors and nurses and then they give him more when its time to sleep. his communication is limited because he is still somewhat weak/sedated, but he has paper, a clipboard, and pencils so he can write down what he is trying to say. that however is also very limited because of the drugs. i am happy to say that the doctors say his lungs are gaining strength every day, but for some reason my dad is breathing heavier and strainging himself to breathe more than he needs to. unfortunately i did not get to see him more than 30 minutes yesterday because in the space directly next to him there was a serious emergency where the visitors were all kicked out so the doctors could do what they needed to save that patient (which they did). my mom is at the hospital now so i should have updates that ill post either later this afternoon or tonight.

on the lighter side of things, my dad hasnt had a shave since 7/30 so he has the kind of scruff that brett farve has. same color and everything. he watches the yankees whenever they are on (the doctors put it on even if he is sleeping so if he wakes up he can watch) and we assume he also wants to watch the giants preseason games. he scribbled what appeared to be the words "giants" and "football", so thats how we came to the conclusion of preseason football.

thats all for now. thanks again to everyone ho ahs been thinking of my family and praying for my dads recovery. it really is greatly appreciated by everyone in my family

Hey Brian I think I met you back in 06 at a meet in GSP, I had a White 05 V6, blacked out. There was a couple of V6's and we had a short cruise and I think your dad was there with you too if I remember correctly. Anyway, I hope he is doing well and everything works out for the best.
