nothing to cause too much concern, but my dad is in new york presbyterian hospital after getting lung volume reduction surgery yesterday. because he smoked for 45 years, his lungs are s#!t and the doctors feel that this surgery will help increase his quality of life. they gave him an epideral in his upper back to help relieve some pain and then cut away 33% of the top portion of each of his lungs in a 3 hour surgery yesterday. the desired affect of this surgery is to cut away the damaged tissue and force the remaining healthy (or healthiest) parts of his lungs to become stronger and increase his breathing. for the past 3 years he has had the nasal canular (oxygen hose) to his nose to help him breathe better. we have been working towards this surgery for the past year. my mom and i had to increase his body weight (was 180 lbs at his healthiest and was down to 120 last august...now he is at 160 and when his lungs get better and he becomes active again, he should continue to gain more weight) and increase his stamina. we did this by setting him up on a strict diet that included high protein and carb foods and shakes as well as having him go to a gym every other day. the latest news is he has been moved from recovery to icu, but one of his lungs is colaspsing due to secretions. this is a common side effect of this surgery, but if it is not taken care of he could develop pneumonia. they are working on him as i speak to drain the secretions. if all goes according to the doctors plans and schedules, he should be moved to a step down unit in another 2-4 days. he should be getting out of the hospital in 7-10 days. all of his vitals are at the best level they could be at currently (normal blood pressure 120/80, complete oxygen saturation in his blood 100, heart rate between 72-76). unfortunately while he is in icu, we can only visit him every 3 hours for 15 minutes at a clip (12 pm, 3 pm, 6 pm, 9 pm), so we can only rely on the reports the doctors and nurses give us each time we are there or call them (limited depending on doctors schedules).

basically the point of this post is to ask you to keep my dad in your thoughts and prayers. although he did this to himself, he is still to young (turning 66 in late november) to say he lived a long happy life. also, think of his whole situation next time you light up.

update from yesterday...
what actually happened was that his right lung was collapsing because there was a small leak between the staples they used to close up the top part of his lungs. this is a normal thing to happen according to the doctors and the literature we were given before the surgery (something like 44% of all patients have this happen). it should heal itself within the next week (normal healing time for this type of leak). last night they heavily sedated my dad to conduct a brochioscope (procedure to drain the secretions from his lung) and then put a breathing tube in him to help relax his muscles while he slept. everything was fine last night at 8. my mom and i called in today to see how he slept and the nurse reported he is doing fine. my mom will be going in later today to visit him and see what the doctors say but everything seems to be going according to plan (minus the leak).

update from friday...
the doctors have performed either 3 or 4 brochioscopes now to drain the fluid from my dads right lung. they say that the leak in his right lung is starting to heal, however, there is now a small leak in his left lung as well (they have assured us it is much smaller than the one he has in the right one). they started my dad on a feeding tube on either saturday or sunday which shows that he has already gotten better. the doctors said they didnt want to give him a feeding tube or anything to eat or drink other than water in case they had to bring him back into the operating room. with that said i believe they feel confident at this point my dad will not be needing further surgery and he is on the road to recovery.
